It is my firmly held belief that no solution need be excessively overdone and ornate.  The simplicity of a solution to a set of needs can yield remarkably intricate interplay between parts.

The last thing you want your bed to be is uncomfortable...maybe horizontal lines make you relaxed, or maybe they simply make you want to lie down.

A desk really needs to accommodate your "spreading out."  Think of neat things like flat-file spaces, drawers with cubbies, cubbies with drawers, writing your initials, erasing your initials, CARVING your initials.

Cabinets and shelves can be as innocuous as a set of boxes on the wall that create a plane of wood panels, yet their clean lines and the grain figure can make them a showpiece.

It's pretty overwhelming to come up with a concise and cohesive plan for how you'd like your space to be arranged.  It can end up feeling like a weird assembly of parts that are being done piecemeal.  Taking the time to sketch out some ideas and committing them to a plan can be a good outline to fall back on. It can be something as simple as color matching, or modifying baseboard size throughout the living room, to coming up with a tasteful way to build a shed in the backyard that's attached to the in-law unit.
