It's pretty overwhelming to come up with a concise and cohesive plan for how you'd like your space to be arranged.  It can end up feeling like a weird assembly of parts that are being done piecemeal.  Taking the time to sketch out some ideas and committing them to a plan can be a good outline to fall back on. It can be something as simple as color matching, or modifying baseboard size throughout the living room, to coming up with a tasteful way to build a shed in the backyard that's attached to the in-law unit.
